Mathematics Education Teacher Awareness Hub
Mathematics Education Teacher Awareness Hub (META Hub) is a web-based platform that connects Mathematics teachers in Sri Lanka with the field of Mathematics Education. This would be the first-ever such platform developed in the country.
This is a collaboration between the Faculty of Technology, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, and the Mathematics Branch of the Ministry of Education.
Mathematics Education is a multidisciplinary as well as an interdisciplinary field of study that deals with theories, practices, policies, curriculum, and issues about the teaching and learning of mathematics along with the associated scholarly research. The field is not yet fully established in Sri Lanka and scholars who have specialized in the field are very few in the country. Hence, Sri Lankan school Mathematics teachers from K-12 have little or no access to the findings in the mathematics education field related to effective teaching practices. We created the META Hub to meet this national need, setting up a bridge between the field of mathematics education and mathematics teachers in Sri Lanka.
In Mathematics Education, there are subject-specific pedagogical strategies and subject-specific
theoretical constructs that inform the teaching practice. Meta Hub hopes to disseminate this
knowledge base to teachers.
Further, there is a national need to equip Mathematics teachers with the necessary knowledge of
Mathematics so that they can confidently teach. Meta Hub will serve this purpose as well since it
reaches all teachers around the country and provides them with an equal opportunity to receive
both subject matter and pedagogical knowledge.
META Hub will be launched in collaboration with the Mathematics Branch of the Ministry of
Education and the Department of Science for Technology, Faculty of Technology, University
of Sri Jayewardenepura. All Mathematics teachers from Grade 6 upwards and any teacher who
teaches any component of Mathematics in school, in general (such as A/L Science for Technology
teachers, A/L Mathematics teachers) are invited to register on the Meta Hub website.
