Doctoral Program in Mathematics Education
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Northern Colorado will start reviewing applications for Fall 2024 semester for its revised doctoral program in Mathematics Education in about a month. The deadline to submit application is February 15th and February 1st is a free application day.
We support almost all admitted students with Teaching Assistantships that come with tuition waiver for four to five years (no additional application is needed). We do not require GRE. I provided further information about PhD program below.
Please do share this with your students who are finishing up a master’s degree in Mathematics or in a related field (with 18 credit-hours of graduate mathematics course work) and interested in conducting research in Mathematics Education. For questions and inquires, send us an email at mathedphd@unco.edu.
Brief information about the revised program: This program is designed for graduate students interested in specializing in mathematics teaching and learning in grades 6-14. Our innovative approach to mathematical pedagogy assumes that a deep understanding of mathematics is fundamental to teaching mathematics, for engaging in mathematics education research, and for supporting reform in mathematics education. The program has three major strands: mathematics, mathematics education, and preparing grades 6-14 mathematics teachers. This program is suited to secondary mathematics teachers who want to continue their education and move into mathematics leadership jobs in K-12 education or a faculty position in higher education, as well as to those with graduate work in mathematics who want to focus on research in mathematics education. In addition, many of our students receive teaching assistantships to help offset the cost of living and part of fees. We provide a tuition waiver to all TAs (during the first 4 to 5 years of the program) (i.e., no tuition is paid by the graduate student; however, insurance and other student fees are the responsibility of the student).
Graduates of the program will be able to teach mathematics at several levels, perform research, engage in and further ongoing efforts to improve mathematics education for all students, and serve as leaders in mathematics education.
